Dreamers' Circus

Great things often take their beginnings in small and unexpected moments. For example, when Ale Carr (cittern) and Rune Tonsgaard (violin) jammed some folk tunes in a pub during a festival 2009 in Copenhagen. Suddenly, Nikolaj Busk came across, sat down at the piano and started to play along. The session continued until next morning! Six months later, Tonsgaard played his examination concert at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He had chosen Mozart’s 5th Violin Concerto. It started as a classical concert until Busk and Carr entered the stage in order to support Tonsgaard interpreting parts of the piece in folk style before the orchestra took over again. The audience was overwhelmed and appreciated the original performance with euphoric applause.

Ever since, the three musicians are stimulating not only Denmark’s folk community. They combine a virtual play with young men’s easiness and mix traditional Danish folk music with classical sounds. That leads to a very unique sound which has been recorded on three records so far: A Little Symphony (2013), Second Movement (2015), Rooftop Sessions (2017).

So far, their musical journey led the three musicians not only through Europe but also to Japan and Australia. Wherever they play, a thrilled audience is left - due to the compositions which can be fleet-footed, melancholic, impulsive or dreamy. As soon as Dreamers' Circus start to play, their overwhelming joy in making music is perceivable. Whereas the sound can switch between being wistful, passionate or reluctant, it is always atmospheric and shaped by a deep longing for harmony, resting upon a deep understanding of music.

By now, Dreamers' Circus are an established part of the Danish folk scene. They push their genre, keep it lively and let it kindly sparkle without neglecting its traditional roots.
